Q.1 The South heavily relied on slavery in the 1800s to provide the much-needed labor to cultivate and harvest cotton whose demand had soared from textile manufacturing industries in England.
Q.2 Slavery was profitable to the economy as it enabled the South to build a commercial enterprise through agriculture, by providing sufficient labor to grow crops that included tobacco, rice, cotton and sugarcane (Timmons, 2018, Aug 31).
Q.3 The southern society’s organization observed the following hierarchy. The White society divided into the middle class and the poor Whites. The Black community followed divided into free persons of Color, Mulattoes and the Slaves.
Q.4 The White Southern elites controlled and maintained plantation system by creating a master class that controlled all the power, developing their standards and vehemently defending slavery.
