The main function of the machine is to house the entire population of people who did not want to stay on earth.
2) What does Vashti’s ritual on page 4 show us about the role the machine plays in her life? Vashti finds the machine fascinating; she embraces the life she lives inside the machine. Vashti's ritual of switching buttons to call for food, clothing, and all the items she needs to show us how technology has alienated her from the rest of the world, without realizing that she has lost touch with the natural world.

According to Forster, the family unit in the Machine world is isolated; people live alone in small pod-like rooms. The cities are underground multi-layers, spread all over the world. All their needs are taken care of by the machine. Humans do not interact face to face, but share valuable ideas through machines hoping to discover, gain and improve upon ideas. The use of electronic communication in real time with voices and pictures is possible.

Science changed the world that existed on the surface of the earth through the discovery of machines that eliminated all work. Through science, many citizens lacked originality or ideas. According to Forster, society lacked the foundation of human thought because there was no natural stimulus. Science simply created a society that strived to be perfect with no natural ideas.

Forster describes man's relationship with nature as a risk, because of lack of freedom. Humans no longer have the desire to do anything and only hope to live easy lives that do not require much effort. He states that "The Machine" are at risk of homelessness, which stands for death." The author argues, "It has robbed us of the sense of space and the sense of touch, it has blurred every human relation and narrowed down love to a carnal act, it has paralyzed our bodies and our wills, and now it compels us to worship it."

Humanity views the material world as a place that lacks ideas; they retreat underground to have ideas that are good enough for all their practical purposes. The earth has been long abandoned.
