John is 11 eleven years old. His mother has just left him at his new school. He is escorted to the dormitory by a boy about his age who will help him make his bed and then take him to class to join the rest. In class, John feels welcome, new, and exciting, but that night, lying in bed, he can’t help but cry. He misses his mom, and he hates that he was left in a boarding school thousands of miles away. The following day John tries to master his courage and keep up with his peers, but it all seems dry. Everything is dry, even the weather. The soil is coarse, and it is almost as if nothing can grow there.
John is in an environment that he has never been in before. The weather is different as it feels drier than the wetter highlands he grew up in. Therefore, climate contributes to his homesickness, foreignness, and alienation ...
