Conversation or Mere Connection?
With the development of modern technology, we are surrounded by a world in which we are all connected to others. On the one hand, everyone can send and receive emails, read, write blogs and chat with friends. On the other hand, technology has some negative effects like limiting human interactions and communication leading to this “plugged in” lives which brought both good effects and side- effects. “Technology has altered the way how people communicate, which creates a sense of companionship but this has changed the way people live” The two articles “Bumping into Mr. Ravioli” by Adam Gopnik and “The Flight from Conversation” by Sherry Turkle have examined the merits and demerits of technology.
The change in modern technology has transformed the way people connect from different ages and groups. Technology has come up with resources and devices that people use to connect with one another. Through cellphone technology communication has become easy because people do not have to meet physically to communicate. People used to have real face to face conversation than connects on mobile devices. However, nowadays people “end up hiding from one another even as we are constantly connected to one another.”(Turkle, pg. 1). People of different ages and groups are facing the same reshape. In the reading passage of Turkle, business people would instead choose to connect with his colleagues on cell phones than to be interrupted. He thinks in the first place that he was afraid to interrupt his colleagues’ work, but later on he realized that he didn’t want to be interrupted. For the 16-year-old boy who relies on texting all the time, didn’t know how to make regular conversations with other people. Also, most young people who grew up in the environment of texting and fearing make a real conversation would be afraid of getting out of their bubble. Today, it is very difficult for teens to strike a conversation with other people. This has also affected those new recruits who are employed in companies because most of the times they have failed to communicate with customers, their fellow employees, and employers.
Technology has changed the way people communicate with one another and this has created companionship. Being social is very important because humans can associate with each other, meet, and catch up with one another. This is part of life. Individuals want to meet with their friends and have real conversations. It can be in a coffee shop or even paying a visit. Communication has a way of bringing people together. In a busy city like New York, individuals rely on communication to keep each other updated. On the one hand, technology has a positive impact on relationships.
