The influence that social media have on teenagers and adolescents is not only of specific importance because the teenagers make up for the greater percentage of the social media use but also because their development is vulnerable to the exposure of the social media. Although social media has a critical role in widening the technical learning skills and social connection, its potential dangers cannot be unnoticed. The independent self-regulation and increased vulnerability to peer pressure expose the adolescents to social media's evils such as sexting, facebook depression and cyber bullying, which are dystopian risks. Besides, other social media problems such as Internet addiction, human network-induced obesity, and sleep deprivation are still under strict scrutiny since contradicting results have been got from different studies.
According to The American Psychological Association, “bullying” is a behavior characterized by extreme aggression by an individual which makes another person uncomfortable. Cyberbullying includes unpleasant and directly threatening emails and anonymous actions such as trolling. Forwarding a personal note to a group when you do not have the authorization to, is also considered as cyberbullying. Trolling is deliberately imposing racism, bigotry, bickering, hatred, or just a pure misogyny between people, mostly anonymous is noted to be pervading in social networks.
One of the principal cause for cyber bullying is the ability to be anonymous on the Internet. Stopbullying.gov categorizes two kinds of persons likely to be cyber bullies - those on the societal fringes and the famous ones. The latter engage in such practices so as to feel powerful or stay famous, while the former troll to suit into the society or get back to the community that keeps them away. From a survey by the National Council on Crime Prevention, averagely three out of four cyberbullying victims finally trace the cyberbully's identity; thus, the anonymity is not as safe as the Internet assumes.
