Specific Terrorist Event – Overview
1 Identify a terrorist event associated with the organization or Lone Wolf.
1 A terrorist event associated with ISIS is the 2015 San Bernardino attack. The attackers posted an allegiance pledge to ISIS leaders on Facebook while carrying out the event using an account with a different name.
2 What was the strategy for the attack (purpose or goal)?
2 Since the attack happened at a Christmas party, the strategy was to kill as many people as possible. The goal was to cause mass panic while still spreading the Islamic state ideologies.
3 Describe the tactics used for the attack. How was the attack carried out?
3 The attack involved a couple. The husband left the party early and came back with the wife to execute the shooting (Byman, 2017). The perpetrators were armed with two long guns and two semi-automatic short-guns and wore dark, military-like gear. They also had several explosives employed at the site which indicated the extent of planning behind the attack.
4 Describe and list the casualties (killed/injured) and/or property damage from the event.
4 The attack left 14 people dead, most of whom were county staff where one of the attackers worked. The casualties were Yvette Velasco, Larry Kaufman, Damian Meins, Sierra Clayborn, Nicholas Thalasinos, Mike Raymond Wetzel, Robert Adams, Bennetta BetBadal, Isaac Amanios, Aurora Godoy, Harry Bowman, Tin Nguyen, Juan Espinoza, and Shannon Johnson. Among the victims, the youngest was 26 while the oldest was 58, with the majority being in their 40's.
5 How did the attack promote the ideology of the organization or Lone Wolf?
5 One of the attackers posted an allegiance message on Facebook to the ISIS leader when the shooting took place. The use of social media was similar to Hoda Muthana’s Twitter use to spread ISIS agenda. The group may have inspired this attack, although no official ordered or directed it. Notably, ISIS had called on different individuals to conduct attacks in its name, which could have been the case.
