1 Passive drops
This kind of blood drop occurs due to the force of gravity. For example, when a moving person is injured, the drops are mostly circular and fall vertically. For instance, an injury to the finger that results in heavy dripping of blood from a vertical position will likely form a pattern of passive drops. Another example is blood drops from a knife in the same vertical position.
2 Projected blood
Sometimes a stab can fall into an artery, and since there is pressure from the heart, the blood comes out with great pressure. It forms a projected bloodstain due to the force striking the source. The pressure makes the blood scatter into droplets through the air, as illustrated above.
3 Spatter stains
A “spatter” occurs if a force more than gravity is applied to a blood pool. A passive drop is mostly circular, but spatter stains have greater force applied, making it spread into smaller-sized spheres. With more force, the size of the spatter diminishes. Thus, if the blood source gets a blow, smaller drops of blood will disperse, which are relatively smaller than the passive blood drops.
4 Diluted blood
If blood is mixed with other liquids or substances such as bodily fluids, it becomes diluted.
