Who could they trust and believe? The US Presidents were supporting the French. They feared that if the French lost control communism would take over this area and spread throughout Asia. French had lowered the self esteem of the Vietnamese The French were afraid to lose the control of this colony they felt it would result in continued losses. \"The French dismissed the Vietnamese claim of independence and planned to reestablish their Indochina colony\"(Moss, 2010). my response Many people forget our long history in Vietnam, remembering it only from the mid-1960s forward. You bring up an essential part of the connection and one that explains many of our subsequent actions. Recall that World War 2 had the effect of eliminating almost all of the European colonies around the world that had existed pre-war. 30 years after the war that lasted the same duration, Vietnam has grown the effects of the war that was brought to the by the Americans and the French. Today the country has the fastest growing economy after China. This is a good example illustrating that, when the nations’ identities are torn apart, they don’t wait around and feel sorry about their situation, but, the develop new cultures that are much stronger and progress oriented. According to a statement made by the Phan Van Khai, Prime Minister of Vietnam, the country wants to be industrialized by the year 2020 (Smith, 2005). This is a clear indication that, after national identity are crushed, countries don’t build on the old cultures, they move on by developing new ones as cited before. They also shifted their stand from being communist to being capitalist in a bid to save the economy that was on its death bed (Smith, 2005).
