Reflection of women mental health
The concept of women suffering from mental health problems in our nation has only been made clearer recently when I had the privilege of learning about these elusive forms of misery through this course. Throughout the lessons, I have found the course to be informative and thought-provoking. Although I have interacted with women and girls with mental health conditions in the past, it never crossed my mind that the prevalence was this high. That is, one in every five women suffers from mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, perinatal depression, eating disorders at least once during their lifetime (World Health Organization, 2020). Through this course, I have learned our actions and perceptions about women also place them at a high risk of mental health problems. Likewise, I have realized that I have an essential role in curbing and protecting women from mental problems by developing appropriate policies and educational programs.
At the start of the lesson, I was shocked to learn that women from many countries worldwide, especially the developing countries, suffer from mental disorders. Specifically, in third world countries, the disorders are more prevalent than in developed countries. For example, in Canada, over 20% of women suffer from some form of mental disorder (Canadian Institutes of Health Research. 2018). On the other hand, I believe many people are aware of mental disorders, but it is a shock to me that the conditions pose negative impacts on women's livelihoods and quality of life.
Over the past years, I have been focused on seeing overt forms of desolation, including stress and depression; however, I did not realize that mental disorders could also be a severe problem that kills. For instance, nearly 10% of women with mental health disorders in Canada attempt suicide every year (Canadian Institutes of Health Research. 2018).
