The self-assessment is completed using the TIGER-based Assessment of Nursing Informatics Competencies (TANIC) tool. TIGER refers to the Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform Initiative which identified a list of the minimum informatics competencies for all nurses and students graduating from pre- and post-licensure programs. The graded self-evaluation of your informatics competencies is required in order to increase one’s own u nderstanding of competencies in nursing informatics which will enable the planning of strategies to enhance knowledge and skills.

How is Informatics Used?
Informatics play a fundamental role in healthcare today, like providing safe, effective, and efficient patient care. The field has integrated information systems and technology into clinical practice, revolutionizing healthcare delivery and enhancing how practitioners collect, analyze, and disseminate health information across different settings (Kleib et al., 2022). Therefore, nurses ought to have a primary competence level concerning nursing informatics such that they use information systems and technology effectively to offer optimal health care.
Perception of Competency Level
Before completing the Pre-Tanic Self-Assessment, my perceived level of competency regarding nursing informatics was majorly novice and partly competent. I have experienced using Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and other clinical information systems. In this context, I felt like I had no comprehensive understanding of the broader position of nursing informatics in providing healthcare. For instance, I had a novice understanding of recognizing attempted phishing and was competent in restoring files and folders from recycle bin. After completion of the self-assessment, my perceived level of competency improved significantly. The tool helped me understand the minimum competencies required in every nurse about nursing informatics. I realized I could improve my knowledge and skills in some areas, like emailing and replying to all functions.
What Two Competencies do you Use in Your Current Clinical Role?
More importantly, I use two competencies in my current clinical role. First, I use the ‘Information Management and Application’ competency. My responsibility as a nurse is to manage patient information and ensure that it is up-to-date and accurate. In doing so, Kleib et al. (2022) assert nurses can use Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and other significant health information systems to record patient care and exchange information with other healthcare team members. For instance, I utilize EHRs to record assessments of patients, the administration of medicine, and other diverse clinical interventions. Also, I incorporate the systems in communicating with pharmacists, physicians, and other healthcare stakeholders concerning patient care.
