1 What does it mean if someone has “co-occurring disorders”?
In psychology, Co-occurring disorders happen when an individual has both a mental health and a substance use disorder at the same time. Co-occurring disorders are usually connected to one another, such as a mental health disorder and alcohol abuse. However, this does not mean that the treatment of one would also lead to the treatment of another. Also, co-occurring disorders could vary in severity depending on the two disorders, which are co-present.
2 When someone has both a mental health and a substance use disorder, is it always clear which disorder came first?
In cases of co-occurring disorders, it is not always clear if substance abuse or mental health disorders come first. In order to know this, practitioners would need to dig deeper into the history of the patient, and consider the social, psychological, and social components that might have caused the disorder CITATION Sub16 \l 1033 (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2016).
