The following questions pertain to:
Velayutham, S. G., Chandra, S. R., Bharath, S., & Shankar, R. G. (2017). Quantitative balance and gait measurement in patients with frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer diseases: A pilot study. Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine, 39(2), 176-182. doi:10.4103/0253-7176.203132

1 What is the purpose of this research?
The researchers sought to determine how gait and balance among elderly patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) influence the risk of fall that is independent from ageing. The authors then used limit of balance (LOS) and dynamic balance as balance measurements.
2 What is the research question (or questions)? This may be implicit or explicit.
How does dementia affect gait and dynamic balance among the elderly?
What limits of stability do the elderly dementia patients face, and how does this influences the risk of patient fall and injuries?
How does gait differ between Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) patients compared to the control group?
3 Give a complete description of theresearch design of this study.
The study was a correlational research where the study participants were matched in the three groups where gait and balance was evaluated for elderly patients with and without dementia and the relation of this related to patient fall. Both gait and balance assessments were carried out for the 24 participants divided into groups of eight
4 What is the population (sample) for this study.
The sample included twenty four male subjects ranging from 50-70 years of age and they were divided into groups depending on whether they were diagnosed with FTD or AD. These patients were recruited from the Outpatient Department of Neurology and Geriatric Clinic, while the controls were obtained from the community (Velayutham et al., 2017). The researchers collected demographic data on the patients, including age, height, weight and gender.
5 Was the sampleapproach adequate for the research design that was selected and explain why.
The sample approach was appropriate as it compared the AD, FTD and controls as the study focused on gait and balance assessment to determine abnormalities in those with dementia. Differences were noted to understand how dementia was associated with the risk of patient fall.
6 Describe the data collection procedure.
The data collected on gait assessment was based on the Biodex Gait Trainer USA Incor tool (). in the case of dynamic balance there were three trials with measurements based on the overall balance index (OBI), in single and dual tasks the other balance tests was the limit of stability and measurements were recorded for further analysis (Velayutham et al., 2017).
7 How were the data analyzed after collection?
There was descriptive data analysis for the AD, FTD and control groups were age and body mass index parameters were collected. There were comparisons among the three groups for the dynamic balance single and dual tasks, stability evaluation focusing on the limits of stability also compared single and dual tasks for the three groups as was changes in the gait. In the case of gait evaluation the parameters were the step ...
