Professional development of nursing professionals Transforming Practice, Transforming Education and Transforming Leadership Name Institution Date   Background The 2010 Institute of Medicine (IOM) focused on the role of nurses to lead change, while continuing education and there is an emphasis on removing barriers to practice and care, promote graduate education, diversity, change practice, leadership and improving data.  Core skills and competencies like knowledge, technical skills, interpersonal skills, and clinical decision-making skills are necessary to improve the safety and quality care.  Care is patient-centered, and nurses work in a multidisciplinary team and emphasis on education, change practice and nurse leadership roles will be explored.                                            IOM report and Nursing EducationThe IOM report on the Future of Nursing proposes expanding training for all nurses and increasing the development of advanced care functions and responsibilities. Nurses are responding to national and international reports to provide high quality and safer care, reducing hospital stay, and reducing the costs associated with readmissions (IOM, 2011).  In nursing education, there is greater emphasis on the development of the role of the advanced clinical nurse, is necessary to make the nurses better prepared for future roles and leadership in nursing and academia.   There is an emphasis on strengthening of postgraduate programs and increase the number of nurses with a doctorate with the IOM highlighting the importance of motivating the nurses to continue with the postgraduate studies.  For instance, recommendation 4 is “increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80% by 2020,” and recommendation 5 is “double the number of nurses with a doctorate by 2020” (IOM, 2011).  These recommendations are important to supporting nursing professional development.  The postgraduate programs would allow nurses to teach nursing education and contribute positively towards the contributing to the advancement of research and clinical practice (Redman et al., 2015). To develop nursing care, there is a need to support using training and achieving higher education attainment.  Achieving academic progression in the field of nursing IOM supports the goal of lifelong learning, which is associated with better care management and quality improvement (IOM, 2011).  Nurses need to focus on the core skills and competencies, which will complete their education, and they also work in a more diverse workforce more than ever before.
