The 2010 Institute of Medicine (IOM) focused on the role of nurses to lead change, while continuing education and there is an emphasis on removing barriers to practice and care, promote graduate education, diversity, change practice, leadership and improving data. Core skills and competencies like knowledge, technical skills, interpersonal skills, and clinical decision-making skills are necessary to improve the safety and quality care.
