Psychiatric illness is a physical form of vulnerability that is encountered in various health care settings. Diagnosis and management of psychiatric illnesses is a cha> given the complex etiology and myriad of symptoms patients may experience. Additionally, patients with psychiatric illness face stigmatization, prejudice, and discriminate resulting in hesitancy or unwillingness to seek care and treatment. (Fox, Eamshaw, Taverna, & Vogt, 2018). This projected mindset of disapproval makes it difficult for peop with mental illness to also find employment and housing (Fox, Eamshaw, Tavema, & Vogt, 2018).
I enjoy learning about others’ culture and working with many different people has really broadened my worldview. Recently I cared for a Somalian woman who suffert a stroke a few months ago. She was non-verbal, so ail of my interactions were with her daughters who were at her bedside a majority of the time. They were strong advocates f< then mother. They ensured that she was comfortable and participated in the care of her mother. The daughters were the primary caregivers, which according to them was an important aspect of their culture; When an elder becomes ill and can no longer care for themselves, the daughter(s) become the main caregiver while receiving assistance from others within the family.

Psychiatric illnesses are one of the most common diseases throughout the world. Since several types of mental illnesses do not have ‘obvious’ physical manifestations, many people tend to ignore their symptoms, reducing professional care access. However, just as you have stated in your post, I also believe that the ‘prejudice’ and ‘stigma’ brought about by these mental illnesses are among the greatest (if not the greatest) reasons for poor access to mental care. Thus, it would be best to reduce these stigmas for people to seek professional care as early as possible.
