He is accompanied by his roommate who states that the patient “was fine this morning’-. The patient’s roommate is planning to leave to go back to the dorm. Questions: What is your initial impression? Following the symptoms, severe headache, stiff neck, and light sensitivity, my initial impression would be that the patient has meningitis. According to Ala et al., (2018), severe headache that causes light sensitivity could be an indication of migraine. However, the condition of a stiff neck is clearly a sign of meningitis. These conditions require immediate treatment. I will, therefore, test the patient’s blood and the spinal fluid to identify the type of meningitis. I would do other tests to check for any inflammation in the patient’s brain or spinal cord. In the case of viral meningitis, I would recommend over the counter pain relievers and ask him to go home. However, for bacterial meningitis, the patient will be hospitalized and be put on intravenous antibiotics. After recovery, I would check for any brain or ear damage.
I will ask the patient’s medical history and whether he has recently traveled to a region that has a high frequency of meningitis. The physical assessment I will focus on is any markings or lumps and reddish skin rash. I would check for two signs of meningitis: Brudzinski’s sign of...
