Advocacy in this profession has been in existence since the time of Florence Nightingale, however, this aspect has come to be more of defined and focused on in late 1980s and modern times. This paper provides an overview of the nurse advocates toward their clients, subordinates and their profession. In addition, it also gives some tidbits on how a nurse could prepare for a media interview regarding some health related issue. Advocacy is defined as "helping others to grow and fulfill their potential.” It is a crucial aspect in the practice of nursing and is mostly used in describing the nurse patient relationship. In nursing practice, patient advocacy incorporates but not limited to the right of patients to advocacy. The nursing advocacy emanates from the nursing philosophy of supporting an individual’s health according to his or her understanding. In other words, advocacy is an ethic or nursing practice (Huston, and Marquis, 2011). Nurses ought to advocate for their clients with regard to resources and use of information systems. With regard to subordinate advocacy, the nurse leader assists other nurses in determining ethical and moral issues and staying with the solutions at the unity level. In addition, these leaders works in coordination with others in ensuring that the health setting is conducive and safe for professional and individual development of the subordinates. Professional advocacy on the other hand, incorporates ethical and moral issues in nursing. When the nurses find an inconsistency between their supposed role and the expectation from the society, they ought to understand that they have a duty to advocate for their profession.
