Assignment: Application: Planned Change in the Nursing Department

Coursework Instructions:

Inter-professional and organizational leadership:Application: Planned Change in a Department or Unit Health, Medicine, Nursing Coursework

Assignment: Application: Planned Change
in a Department or Unit
Health care organizations are continuously immersed in change from the emergence of new policies, to promote quality care and improve patient safety to keeping pace with the rapid growth in knowledge and best practices. Establishing a solid framework for planning and implementing change is a wise move, as it provides a foundation for the extensive coordination that will be needed to successfully facilitate the change.
For this Assignment, you propose a change at the department or unit level and develop a plan for guiding the change effort.
To prepare:
• Review Chapter 8 in the course text. Focus on Kurt Lewin’s change theory, and contrast it with other classic change models and strategies.
• Reflect on problems, inefficiencies, and critical issues within a specific department, unit, or area in your organization or one with which you are familiar. Select one issue as a focal point for this assignment, and consider a change that could be made to address the issue.
• Think about how the change would align with the organization’s mission, vision, and values as well as relevant professional standards.
• Using one of the change models or strategies discussed in Chapter 8, begin formulating a plan for implementing the change within the department/unit. Outline the steps that you and/or others should follow to facilitate the change effort. Align these steps to the change model or strategy you selected.
• Determine who should be involved in initiating and managing the change. Consider the skills and characteristics that are necessary to facilitate this change effort.
To complete:
By Day 7
Write a 3- to 5-page paper (page count does not include title and reference page) that addresses the following:
• Identify a problem, inefficiency, or issue within a specific department/unit.
• Describe a specific, realistic change that could be made to address the issue.
• Summarize how the change would align with the organization’s mission, vision, and values as well as relevant professional standards.
• Identify a change model or strategy to guide your planning for implementing the change. Provide a rationale for your selection.
• Outline the steps that you and/or others would follow to facilitate the change. Align these steps to your selected change model or strategy.
• Explain who would be involved in initiating and managing this change. Describe the skills and characteristics that would be necessary to facilitate the change effort.
Reminder: The School of Nursing requires that all papers submitted include a title page, introduction, summary, and references. The Sample Paper provided at the Walden Writing Center provides an example of those required elements. All papers submitted must use this formatting.
Note: This Assignment will serve as your Portfolio Assignment for this course.
MEANING THIS ASSIGNMENT IS THE FIRST OF SERIES OF ASSIGNMENT. So the writer should understand, there will be a continuation or a part 2 or other parts of this assignment in the near future.

Planned Change in the Nursing Department
Student’s Name
Institution
Date
Introduction
Change management is a critical component in the development of quality processes in health institutions which typically leads to massive improvements within the institution. Planned change in the business environment is an important instrument or gaining a competitive advantage. Such change motivates the employees to embrace changes that focus on addressing a specific business efficiency issue (Mitchell, 2013). The paper will concentrate on identifying an issue within the nursing department. It will also analyze and provide real change that would sufficiently address the problem. Additionally, a summary of the manner that the change will align with the objectives, values, and goals of the health institution will be indicated while providing a rationale for the proposed change strategy.
Analysis
Identification of problem
Nursing care information within the nursing department has not been integrated effectively in regards to the information that is being stored electronically. This is has been done continuously without considering the research conducted by numerous health information experts. These individuals have asserted that nurses have issues in augmenting the accuracy of the estimated healthcare records (EHR) that they have, and therefore, they cannot provide the best diagnosis on their patients (Laureate Education, 2012).
This problem consequently affects the data and patient care programs offered by the nursing department, as some nurses lack the expertise in effectively managing electronic health records in health institutions. Therefore, the identified concern here is insecurity and the competency issues that most nurses face due to the introduction of electronic health records within the health institution.
Proposed change
The purpose of EHR is to store information in a health institution. An EHR is ordinarily available to the entire healthcare department which also increases the accessibility to both the patients and the medical practitioner. However, when the health institution does not create a suitable security system that will prevent their servers from all types of attacks, it is highly vulnerable. However, these types of concerns and issues can be resolved by discussing the importance of having an effective EHR system with the nurses in their department and also hire a change consultant that would monitor the change process in the health department and the institution as a whole (McAlearney et al., 2014).
Aligning the proceed change model with the goals, values, vision, mission and standards of the organization
Since the primary objective of an EHR system is to reduce errors and facilitate appropriate documentation in healthcare, the EHR system will be implemented in the nursing department by placing computers throughout the nursing units. Additionally, handheld and associated technologies will be tested by informatics experts that will be hired by the institution (Laureate Education, 2012). These experts will focus on upgrading the current data entry and retrieval systems within the proposed EHR framework to improve efficiency in the management of patient records by the nurses. The proposed...
