Week 1 Discussion: Introduction to Evidence-based Practice
Discussion
We begin our journey into discovering the new world of research and evidence-based practice (EBP) by exploring our past. After completing the required readings and lesson, answer the following:
- Explain how research has evolved since the Florence Nightingale era.
- Discuss how research and EBP are different; include how you believe research supports EBP for nursing.
- Describe one past/historical unethical breach of research conduct; then, share how you would ensure care of a study participant using one ethical or legal research consideration (guideline/principle).
Atleast 2 references need to be used.

Introduction
Question 1
Research is as a systematic process that involves investigation or probe of questions using strict procedures, to produce answers that are trustworthy and unbiased in nursing practice. The evidence gathered about nursing practice is utilized to evaluate and determine better interventions or solutions to problems. Nightingale introduced research in nursing about 150 years ago. The data collected drove the changes in the nursing practice. During the 1950s, nursing education was introduced in several universities and nursing research became a prominent undertaking. More channels for publishing research findings were established during 1970s and 1980s, expanding the audience for the work (Houser, 2018). The National Institutes of Health (NIH) created the National Center for Research for Nursing in 1986, with several stations across the United States. These centers were later elevated to full institute, and they were renamed to National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) in 1993. This move placed the nursing field equal with medical research and other sciences. The goal of NINR is to enhance nursing care and provide quality services through research (Houser, 2018).
