Technology is integrated into health care to address patient safety concerns, and IT alerts tools and systems are one such option where it is possible to analyze data and information on patient alerts and safety. Data, information and technology are elements of informatics that necessary to facilitate decision-making (Yoder-Wise, 2014). The case for using alert tools that can be personalized to be well suited for specific clinical settings is that there could be alert fatigue. Health IT hazards is likely to be present when there is no adequate management of the alert system. Having IT alert tools that prioritize issues based on the levels of importance can make a big difference in improving patient safety. Managing the alerts system is difficult when there are various alert devices where noise is likely to interfere with the health practitioners’ awareness.
The benefit of a well designed alert system is that it allows health practitioners to be vigilant when providing medical care to avoid making errors and disrupting the workflow (Kanagasundaram et al. 2016). There are more likely to be informed when their services are required, including providing medication and supervising patients. Hence, alarm systems make it easier for health care providers to be well prepared in clinical settings.
