Carper’s Patterns of Knowing range from ethical, personal, ethical, and aesthetic knowing. Nurse practitioners can embrace patterns of knowing in clinical practice and ultimately achieve desired outcomes such as patient safety and delivery of quality care. According to Rafii et al. (2021, p. 139), “nurses apply the patterns of knowing in three ways in their clinical practice: “cohesion of patterns of knowing, domination of some patterns of knowing, and elimination of some patterns of knowing.” Through Carper’s theory, nursing practitioners comprehend the complexity of nursing practice. For example, the personal knowing listed above includes an awareness of strengths and weaknesses, which includes the prevalence of individual bias that can impede successful patient-caregiver relationships, resulting in poor outpatient care. However, the focus on aesthetic knowing includes the nurse practitioners’ ability to recognize the need for empathy and holism.
Applying Carper’s patterns of knowing includes a nurse practitioner’s awareness and recognition of the society and culture of the patient receiving outpatient care.
