Factors that affect the “sensitive machine” of movement through the global supply chain include environmental risks such as poor weather conditions or natural disasters (UWCFIRE, 2009). In addition, economic factors such as labor costs, price volatility, and increases in fuel prices interfere with the global supply chain. For example, when fuel prices skyrocket, the product may take longer to reach the retailer as some suppliers may not afford the additional cost. Zinn and Goldsby (2020) note that technological conditions such as poor computer networks or ICT disruptions and infrastructure failures could also interfere with the supply chain. Even geopolitical factors such as political instability, terrorism, and trade restrictions can hinder the supply chain.
