Discussion Forum 7: The authors explain how there are three (3) basic components to the skills of compassion: understanding, accepting, and forgiving. Kristin Neff also stresses the importance of compassion for others and self-compassion as it relates to self-esteem in her video. Select one of the FSI family members and apply these concepts to how you might work with him or her. Type a scenario of you going through the steps of the Compassionate Response (p.113) with your chosen FSI family. Be sure to discuss how you would work with the client regarding their sense of self- worth. Lesson 7 Reflection: the authors provide exercise to help train us in feeling compassion for others and also self-compassion ( video Encounter, Active Listening, Compassion for Things past, and Compassion Meditation. Try each four this week. As you are completing the exercises, think about how the exercise might be beneficial for the FSI family. Summarize your experience with each of the exercises. The three primary components of a compassionate mind are understanding, forgiving, and accepting. When individuals understand, accept who they are, and learn to forgive themselves and others, they become more compassionate and lead healthy lives. In her TEDxCentennialParkWomen, “The Space Between Self-Esteem and Self Compassion,” Kristin Neff emphasizes the importance of self-compassion and how it helped her overcome stress from her divorce, and accepting her son’s autistic diagnosis. She defines self-compassion as a way of relating to ourselves kindly and embracing ourselves the way we are. In her research, Neff asserts that self-compassion has three primary components, namely self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness (TEDx Talks, 2013). In the Family Services Initiative (FSI), I selected the grandmother responsible for taking care of her two grandchildren.
I would show compassion to the grandmother since she did not do anything wrong for her to get kicked out of the house. As such, I would comfort her by making her accept the reality and understand that there might be an explanation for her facing the challenges as she did. I would encourage her to forgive the person who kicked her and her two grandchildren out of the house and focus on how to get another place to live without worries of being kicked out. The steps of the compassionate response that we should follow include the need to change her behavior positively, awareness or beliefs, and the hurt, pain, and other feelings influenced by the behavior. For example, I would encourage the grandmother to forgive the individual who kicked her and her grandchildren out of his house to avoid being stressed and delaying accepting the reality that she was homeless.
