Reflection Paper and Discussion Posting Assignment

Guidelines and Evaluation Criteria

Each Reflection Paper will focus on one module:

  • Reflection Paper 3 will focus on Learning from the History of Organizing for Change.

Each Reflection Paper will be approximately 400-500 words long, double-spaced and proofread.  In each Reflection Paper, discuss your personal thoughts about and responses to the assigned readings and Concepts for that Module.

Please include the following in each Reflection Paper (for 7 marks):

1) Choose a short quotation (minimum 1 full sentence, maximum one short paragraph) from one of the assigned readings or videos in this course. Choose a quotation that refers to or includes  a lesson about how to make change happen, guides us in how to engage in effective activism/organizing, or that teaches us something about how previous generations made their lives – and the lives of others like them -- better. Include the quotation that you have chosen, with an in-text reference, in your Reflection Paper. Then explain why you chose this quotation. What did you find it has to teach or show us? (2 marks)

2) Which of the Concepts that we have covered (see list in each Module) applies to – or is used in -- the quotation that you chose? Explain how one or two Concepts relate to the quotation that you chose in question 1. (1 mark)

3) Describe your emotional reactions to the quotation from the reading that you used in question 1 – and/or to the reading as a whole. How do you feel about this quotation/reading? (Some options are intrigued, uncomfortable, surprised, pleased, displeased, angry, inspired, defensive, disbelieving, or impressed.) Why do you think you feel this way? What factors do you think influenced your emotional responses to this quotation? Please be as specific as possible and remember that this question is about feelings rather than thoughts (you discussed thoughts in your response to question 1). (2 marks)

4) How does the quotation you chose relate to your own experiences or those of your family and friends? How does this quotation apply today? What connections can you draw between the conditions for workers in the past, as discussed in that quotation (or the reading or video the quote is from) and situations today? Which workers are most vulnerable to abuse and exploitation today? What does this quotation teach us about? What lessons from this reading/video/quotation can we apply today? Again, please be specific. (2 marks)

You are welcome to comment on other aspects of the class (discussions, videos, exercises, assignments), but your mark for each Reflection Paper will be based on your answers to the questions above.

Hints for writing excellent Reflection Papers

  • Make sure you include full quotations (don’t stop mid-sentence), in quotation marks. Include the author’s last name and page number(s) after every quotation. Use APA in-text format: (Author’s last name, date of publication, pg. #). I.e., (Gage, 1991, p. 40).
  • Avoid choosing a quotation from the first paragraph – or the first page – of the reading. Read the whole piece before you make your choice.
  • Don’t worry about using a formal writing style. Use your own words and a relaxed, conversational style, but write in full sentences and paragraphs. Also, refer to the articles’ authors by their last names or their first and last names, but not by first names only.
  • Do check your spelling and grammar and express your thoughts and ideas as clearly and accurately as possible. Editing and proofreading can help you clarify your viewpoint.
  • Discuss (and think about) your own position. Do not make unsubstantiated (i.e. unproven) or vague claims or judgments.  It’s not sufficient simply to state an opinion; explore and explain why you have that opinion. What experiences have shaped your views on the issue? Be critical of your own perspective, as well as of those expressed in the course material.
  • Avoid imprecise thinking.  Be specific. Give clear examples. Do not overgeneralize (i.e. don’t blame “society” or other abstractions. Try instead to pinpoint specific elements of particular cultures, institutions, or belief systems).

Reflection Paper
In Immigration to Canada: New Faces in the Crowd, the effects of immigration on race are addressed, albeit in a subtle manner. It is revealed that “in the periods of immigration that followed, this structure of immigration became even more defined with the non-white immigrants, particularly Asians, constituting the largest groups of immigrants arriving annually in Canada in the 1990s” (Isajiw, 1999, p.85). I chose this quote because it reflects how to change, especially concerning racism and the predomination of whites in Canada, was addressed in the1960s. This quote teaches us that change is within us and to address social issues, we need to make the right decisions. The change encountered during this period ensured that the racial and ethnic composition of immigrants did not favor just one group of people. Before the new non-racist merit point system, immigrants in Canada were mostly whites of European and American origin, but this changed and the composition of immigrants became more diverse.
The quote also addresses the importance of racial diversity and inclusion in every aspect of society. It shows how immigration in Canada became diverse and more inclusive because other than Europeans and Americans, who are white, non-white immigrants increasingly migrated to Canada (Isajiw, 1999). It also shows that change can be overwhelming. The new non-racist merit system was introduced to ensure that immigration was not racial. It brought positive results by increasing the number of non-whites immigrants in Canada. However, over time, the numbers of non-white immigrants increased and they became the l...
