  1. Written communication

    1. Written communication in this sense is defined as being able to convey meanings or information to other people through the use of writing. Specifically, someone should be able to write for business purposes, meaning the writing should be concise and to the point Being able to effectively communicate is important in the business world because, without it, employees in all levels of an organization are unable to share information and news with each other, and this leads to dysfunction in an organization.

    2. Someone can develop their written communication skills by taking classes where you are required to write. In the UB School of Management, you can take MGG 303: Communication Literacy for Business 2, where you will gain experience and develop skills on how to properly write in a workplace. Another way to improve your written communication skills at UB is to join a club such as The Spectrum, which is the student newspaper, where you can hone your writing style and skills.


  2. Networking

    1. Networking is defined as the action or process of interacting with others to exchange information and develop professional or social contacts. Networking helps someone share information with someone else as well as allowing someone to learn about different opportunities. This skill is a valuable one to have in the finance field, as you can expand your professional network and meet people who can help you develop your career.

    2. To get a jump start on building a professional network during their time at UB, they can get a Linkedin account and reach out to their fellow students and professors. This allows someone to establish a connection early and allows someone to develop contacts in their field of interest. Another way to develop their network is to join clubs at UB, as they can find people who have similar career interests and form a connection with them.


  3. Basic business knowledge

    1. Basic business knowledge refers to having a basic understanding of business functions and specific areas. These areas can include accounting, finance, marketing, and operations just to name some. It is important to have the basic business fundamentals understood as it will allow for a person to have some sort of foundation, to begin with. Without this foundation, a person can become more burned out and can experience a steeper learning curve.

    2. To develop basic business knowledge, students in the School of Management should be paying attention in all the classes they take. Classes such as MGB 301 and MGT 401 may not be directly related to someone’s concentration, but these classes help develop that foundation that you can rely on for the rest of your career. Paying attention, taking notes and asking questions in these non-concentration classes will go a long way to helping a student develop their basic business knowledge.


  4. Passion, work ethic

    1. Having a strong passion for something means to have a strong feeling of affinity, enthusiasm, desire or love for that thing. When a person has that strong passion, it tends to correlate o them having a stronger work ethic. Work ethic refers to how someone feels about their career and also pertains to how you perform at your job. So, having a strong ethic and being a hard worker is a result of someone having a passion for what they do. This will lead to a person experiencing more joy at their jobs, as well as becoming less likely to become burned out.

    2. To get a jump start on this skill as a college student, a college student should try and determine what they enjoy and see if there is a career out there in that field. When a UB School of Management takes MGG 298: Career Connections 1

  1. Field/sales experience

    1. Sales reps are helpful, detailed-oriented, self motivated, and goal-oriented.  In the business world having a skill set in sales is quite beneficial for the success of an individual or company.  Sales is what often times makes businesses profitable and allows companies to grow.  As for any skill, the most adequate way to develop that skill is not in the classroom, but by having real field experience.  Learning through your mistakes and by practicing the soft skills needed to be a sales rep is what catapults an inexperienced sales rep to a confident sociable sales rep. 

    2. Students can improve on their sales skill set by getting a job or some other form of experience in sales.  Working and getting field experience is what will make students comfortable with sales and will allow them to gain confidence that will be carried into a future career.  Experience such as working in retail or customer service is a great first experience with sales and is realistic and attainable for many students.



 


 



  1. Knowing how to utilize technology

    1. Our society is heading into the direction of the digital age.  Knowing how to utilize technology is greatly beneficial not only in everyday life but in the world of business.  Tracking data, research, and networking are all greatly effective if an individual or company utilizes technology.  Security for a company can be very important and the most secure way of protecting private information is through the use of technology.  Technology also allows companies to expand by not having to be in the same physical space but instead the same digital space.  Utilizing technology improves relations with customers, efficiency, security, and ability to research and develop.

    2. Many current students actually have an advantage over professionals in utilizing technology.  Technology has been woven into the lives of students in a way that most professionals did not experience.  Students still can improve their use of utilizing technology by finding new ways to use technology within their studies.  Creating study materials and conducting research online are just some examples of how students can utilize technology while at UB.
