The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requires aviation industries to comply with the Safety Management System (SMS) to enhance safety. The “4 pillars” of SMS include safety policy, safety risk management, safety assurance, as well as safety promotion. In safety policy, SMS requires the senior management’s assurance or commitment to persistently work on improving safety by defining policies, methods, as well as the organizational structure to ensure continued safety. This requires defining of roles, responsibilities, and relationships as it is outlined in the policies and procedures (Müller, Wittmer & Drax, 2014, p. 51).
Safety Risk Management (SRM) is a system that requires aviation service providers to define formal hazard recognition and safety risk control. The system ensures that hazards can be identified, the assessment of risks, analysis of all risks, and also management of risks. Risk assessment and analysis ensures that severity and likelihood of the identified risks can be determined (Müller, Wittmer & Drax, 2014, p. 52).
