Nobody wishes a disaster on themselves or any other being, be it allies or friends. Catastrophes affect and have lasting effects on all depending on their magnitude of occurrence. FEMA is a body tasked with providing basic needs such as food, shelter, and clothing to victims of catastrophes, as they support other working bodies. Hurricane Katrina is said to have been a great hit on American soil, a crash that dated 29th August 2005. Close to 1500 people succumbed to the conditions (Falkenrath, 2001).
FEMA responded swiftly to the disaster, though it carried significant blame for the little efforts in averting it. FEMA needs to do the following to avert such disasters in the future; the body needs to establish better training facilities to respond effectively to such occurrences. Performance and evaluation programs can prepare personnel working with the body through such training programs. Secondly, FEMA needs to improve its networking system (Murry, 2006). A good system is in the case of mobile apps, which can transfer real-time data on the ground to donors and other bodies following catastrophes remotely. Victim management systems and policies are necessary for managing disasters effectively.
Thirdly, better strategies and approximations have to be put into place. Drills alone are not enough, as witnessed. Budgets need to be pre-arranged to avoid mayhem, as witnessed during the hurricane when companies failed to take up tasks due to financial issues. Contract forms need to be on standby if such hurricanes knock without a prior warning.
