Hong Kong International Airport is Hong Kong’s primary airport that started operations in 1998. The airport replaced the original Kai Tak Airport, and is built on the man-made Chep Lak Kok Island (Yeung & Shen, 2008). The airport serves over one hundred airlines and connects to approximately one hundred and eighty destinations. Also, it is among the busiest air cargo hubs serving several international markets. The adequate cargo capacity, security, strategic location, effective cargo operations, and IT applications make the airport’s cargo handling among the best (McKinnon, 2011).
The primary air cargo that are transported via the site is classified into two groups; the heavy-lift cargo and the express cargo (NG, 2015). The cargo is mainly made up of packages and parcels. There are four primary cargo operators; Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals, DHL’s Central Asia Hub, Asia Airfreight Terminal, Cathay Pacific, and Hong Kong Post’s Air Mail Centre.
