Structure and Functions of Deers Research Assignment

Coursework Instructions:

Identify an organism that lives within 50 miles of your home. Deers
Write a paper about how deers have adapted to survive in their specific environment. Include the following points in your paper:
Briefly describe the environment in Central Texas (temperature, landscape, food sources, etc.) and describe the organism's role in the environment. Determine which organism deers would be most closely related to using a phylogenetic tree.
Identify the structures and functions of the main organs found in your selected organism.
Explain how deers have evolved physiologically to become suited to its environment.
Explain how things would change if the organism were to be transplanted to a significantly different environment:
Would this organ system still be as efficient? Why or why not?
Would the organism survive in this new environment? Why or why not?

Central Texas is generally hilly with many rivers flowing through it bellow the numerous hills. It experiences the semi-arid type of climate. The climate is characterized by hot summers and cool winters. The area is subjected to huge and rapid fluctuations of temperatures during the changes in summer and winter seasons. The temperature can drop to 50 and 60 degrees within a period of 12 hours. There is a time when the temperature goes below 0F though the average temperature according to the U.S climate data is 69.4F. This usually happens twice a year. Most precipitation occurs in between April and September. The annual precipitation on average is 34.25 inches with an average snowfall of 15.6 inches.
Central Texas is endowed with a number of natural resources. They include the fossil fuel which takes part in the oil production, the limestone which is a raw material for the cement industries. There are also deposits of iron-ore in the region and the byproducts of the animals to be specific the Bat guano (John, 2011). The region is also endorsed in agricultural activities; there are a number of cattle ranches, cotton, and sheep production.
The terrain and the physical landscape together with the climate of Central Texas generally support a variety of wildlife. Examples of wild animals are the deer, raccoons, opossums, armadillos and fox squirrel among others. Deer to be specific, white-tailed deer can be identified 50 miles from my homestead. This species of wildlife happen to be well adapted to most habitats. The most suitable environment for white-tailed deer is that with bush lands, croplands and hardwoods. Over the past few years, the population of the white-tailed beers in Central has increased rapidly.
This increment as been associated with certain factors such as those mentioned afterward. One and the most profound factor is the substantial decrement in the numbers of the natural predators. The most common predators are wolves and the mountain lions. The cattle ranchers suppressed the parasite by the name blow fly screw-worm. The activity of deer hunting was also banned. The two latter factors worked to the favor of the deer population. Urbanization is another crucial factor. The development of residential has provided a room for accessible and edible plants. Some homeowners are generous enough to go an extra mile of providing the food supply with supplements. These supplements are corn, salt blocks, and pellets.
In the ecosystem, deer play the consumer role. Deer feed on green plants and are therefore herbivore. They are the primary consumers in the food chain. Deer are prey to other predators. Human is also considered a predator of deer. Humans hunt deer for their meat, skin among others. However, high densities of deer per unit area have imposed threat the ecology. The herbaceous and woody vegetation has had a considerable reduction. Highly valuable trees such as oak have failed to regenerate after being consumed by deer. This influences directly other wildlife.
A deer has got three main body organs; the head, the legs and the trunk. The head of the deer as expected is perched on its neck. The neck is usually thick and long. The head hou...
