Is there strong evidence that environmental factors affect epigenetic changes, which in turn influence alterations in DNA methylation and affect gene expression in humans?
Epigenetic markers at birth can explain health differences and outcomes late in life since DNA methylation is likely to increase disease risk and dysfunction when gene expressions are affected. The research highlighted that the birth weight of children born of mothers who were starved early in their pregnancies were born at normal weight, but were prone to being overweight and obese as are subsequent generations. Research on the presence of epigenetic components in major diseases and disorders would provide insights on the extent to which the environment affects epigenetics as reflected in the offspring, second and third generations.
