Thrombocytopenia develops when the red bone marrow and the stem cells, which form platelets, are destroyed through radiation, certain drugs, or disorders such as bone marrow cancer. The common symptoms that may be associated with such a condition include failure of blood to clot even after a small cut since the function of platelets is to help in blood clotting. However, among individuals with thrombocytopenia, formation of platelets is affected due the destruction of the stem cells that produce platelets (Starr & McMillan, 2010). Anemia is a common problem that can be associated with thrombocytopenia.
