Unlike marine species living in a vast environment, freshwater species depend on an environment where water is scarce and their exposure to predators and pollution is very high. Moreover, the freshwaters face extinction with high globalization rate and expansion of cities and constructions. For instance, California’s native fish species (6% of 129) are extinct with half of them facing extinction danger. Introduction of dams also affect the lives of freshwater species like molluscs and irrigation projects cause water sources to dry up. Factors such as diseases, general habitat damage, invasive species, and overharvesting also pose a great danger to the survival of freshwater species as compared to the marine species (Primack & Sher, 2016, p. 160).
