Religion dates back to ancient times, as far as the existence of humankind. It entails a set of beliefs and practices that a certain group regard as a connection to a supreme being. There exist very many forms of religion in the world, with Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Judaism groups being the top five largest. Approximately 75 percent of the people globally associate themselves with one of the above groups (Juan, 2018). In the modern day world, religion plays a crucial role in the development of cultures and civilizations. Also, it has proven to be a crucial element in the promotion of social stability and cohesiveness in society. Religion has both positive and negative aspects in the world.
Positive Aspects of Religion
Religion has been closely linked with giving people a sense of belonging, a positive goal in life, and promoting social harmony, moral values and social changes in society. Religion entails a belief in a Supreme Being or force. Most of the religious group have a set of practices and individuals who are regarded as religious leaders. Such individuals help advance social harmony among their believers. Also, religion has played a crucial role in the adoption of cultures that advance social harmony.
Religion encourages moral or values that are regarded as right within a group. In most cases, it helps people differentiate the right and wrong in their daily lives, helping create a good behavior among the followers. For example, the Christian’s ten commandments outline some of the rules in Christianity. Such rules create a system, outlining the good and the bad, as well as the rewards and the punishment for the ones that break the law (Education Scotland, 2018). Additionally, due to this capability, religion has been used to promote social change in some aspects of society. In the US, churches were used to support and strengthen the antislavery movements.
