This is a document that students in this course are expected to use as a tool to help them develop strong drawings. Its purpose is to assist students in maintaining an awareness of the various factors that influence the appearance of a 2 dimensional work and guide them to create the necessary conditions for a successful drawing while reinforcing students' understanding of design concepts. Students are expected to use proper drawing and design terminology when participating in critiques and when presenting their work.
Objectives:
Understand and adopt terminology.
Critically analyze existing conditions on students' own
work.
. Generate feedback on peers' work.
Develop an awareness of the formal and technical factors
that can influence the development of content.
Utilize all of the written resources provided to students in
this course in the process of planning, developing and completing the final project (self-directed work).
Develop a professional and efficient verbal presentation of
the final project.
Expectations:
Students in this course are expected to use terminology as follows:
During the development of all course work including class exercises, home assignments, sketchbook works and the final project.
During critiques as a checklist to follow when analyzing the work under review.
To prepare for the final presentation; Students are asked to develop a written description of what they have done to address each one of the listed factors. They read this description in class during the Final Project presentation, which will take place on the last day of classes.

Formal aspects:
UNITY: Is the work unified? How is it unified? (i.e. by
repetition, continuation, continuity, or proximity)
CONTRASTS / VISUAL IMPACT: Is there enough
contrast to make the work noticeable / visible from a distance? What are some of these contrasts? (i.e. size, placement, direction, shape, value, texture, color, etc.). Do these contrasts compel the viewer to come closer to the work to examine it farther?
GRAPHIC IMPACT: Is there a simple and memorable
overall pattern of value or color shapes that is appealing? Is it possible to describe this pattern in just a few words? Does this pattern compel the viewer to come closer to the work to examine it further?
VARIETY: Is there enough variation to make the work’s

BALANCE: Is the work balanced and how? (i.e. what type
of balance: formal, symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial, crystallographic?)
PROPORTION: Is there a sense of proportion in the work?
(i.e. noticeable size relationship that underlies the structure of the work). Is there an underlying grid upon which important visual events are placed? Is there a deliberate process followed to create size relationships?
EMPHASIS: Is there emphasis or a focal point in the work?
How is it created? (i.e. by contrasts of size, direction, placement, value, color, texture, by isolation and radial arrangement). Are there accents (smaller areas of emphasis) that encourage the viewer to explore the entire space of the work?
VISUAL ELEMENTS AND THEIR USE: What kinds of
elements have been used in the work and what is their function? (i.e. how was line, shape, value, texture and color used in the work? To create what?)
SPACE/VOLUME: Is there depth in the work? How is it
created? (i.e. diminution / scale shifts, linear and/or aerial perspective, vertical location, diagonal movements, overlapping, planes, contour lines, cross contour lines, chiaroscuro, etc.)

JUSTIFICATION/MOTIVATION: Explain the idea or

CONCLUSION: Explain the kind of lessons demonstrated
in the work and the kind of breakthroughs experienced; what kind of misunderstanding continued to linger during the development of the work

The impact of a piece of an artwork depends on how the artist mixes the different aspects of artwork into one coherent piece. In the piece at hand, it could be seen that the overall picture is unified since colors present continuity of shades and hues, varying from dark to light ones. Due to how the shadows are placed, it also creates a contrast that elicits the viewer to come nearer and inspect the smaller details of the piece.
However, it seems that the crystallographic balance of the art does not fit well with the other aspects such as variety and placement.
