Case study for a patient with an INFJ Personality
Subjective –
The patient is a 20-year-old Hispanic male, brought into the clinic today by his 36-year-old mother. Patient was a college student at a Community College and the breadwinner of his two siblings. Patient said that he lost her scholarship because of the university cutting its cost, and have recently offered a job as a sales clerk in a new shopping mall. Her mother – B. L. – is a colleague of the clinician who referred her to the clinic because of the fatigue and feeling of restlessness that he experiences after work. The patient reported that he prefers quiet places and most of the time he feels “weak” whenever he’s in a crowded place. Regarding her goals in life and her focus on them, he said that:
“I don’t usually think of living in the moment. Even if I want to, my mind keeps thinking of how would my actions affect my future?”… “I took the job for two main reasons… For one, I need to finance my and my sibling’s schooling, and I also don’t want others to see me as incompetent and worthless. A lot of people these days judge you even if they don’t know what you’re going through.”
B.L. reported that one of the distinguishing characteristics of her daughter is her way of always thinking about others and how do her actions affect how everyone works with one another. B.L. also said how her son becomes “a little bit irritated when the plan goes not as how it’s supposed to be.”
Objective –
Patient showed signs of expending energy when socializing with a large group of people through the MBTI test. Other results of the test states that the patient prefers; (1) an objective focus on the future and the general picture; (2) consideration of the social implications of an act or an idea; and (3) a high preference on “predictable situations” as compared to others.
Assessment –
Based on the MBTI test results, the patient’s personality is categorized as INFJ (Introversion, Intuition, Feeling, and Judging) personality. Personality types like these are designed for expressive careers and those that would help them connect with others in a holistic manner. Thus, her feeling of fatigue and restlessness is because of his work as a clerk that requires her to socialize with a multitude of people. This then is the reason for her constant feeling of fatigue and restlessness.
Plan –
Patient is advised to attend career individual counseling sessions at least once every week for the next four weeks. Counseling sessions to help him figure out what job is best for her personality in consideration of what jobs are available should be thoroughly addressed. At the same time, the patient’s goals and current stress levels should be checked every counseling session. Lastly, the patient’...
