The volume of the McDonald’s products and services is high due to the high repeatability, specialization, and low unit cost in producing McDonald’s fast food products. The variety of products and services is mid-low because there is already a set menu and process which also affects the volume. It is less complex resulting to increased production but with lesser flexibility and customization. There is also mid-low variation of products and services due to the routine output, predictability, and low costing. The low variety and high volume of the menu also contributes to the routine and predictability resulting to mid-low variation. The visibility of products and services is still considered low, because the involvement of the customers is mostly centered on experiencing the output but not the process. There is only minimal exposure in the process of making the products.
2. What is the relative importance of the operational performance objectives (quality, speed, dependability, flexibility, cost) of McDonald’s? Justify your answer.
The company had demonstrated these objectives in their operations even during the starting year, giving them an advantage over their competitions while also catering to the needs and wants of their consumers. As a fast-food chain, McDonald’s should prioritize quality of the product then the speed of service but still with consideration to the other operational performance objectives.
The speed and cost work hand in hand because the speed of the service greatly affects the productivity of the business and how many sales will they be able to reach in a given span of time. But these two objectives should not sacrifice the quality of the products and services that are offered to the customers. The customers will still go back to McDonald’s when they find that the quality is worth or even more than what they had paid for. This is also the most important objective that should be met especially when in the food industry such as McDonald’s. Another objective is the dependability, and this is considered to be one of the foundations of McDonald’s that it is implementing all over its branches. This is involved with the consistency of good quality and service that is provided. This is also seen with the innovation of the machines to make sure that the speed, cleanliness, and efficiency goals in providing quality products are achieved. Among the operational performance objectives, flexibility is where McDonald’s is not very focused on. There is a contradiction to their goal of providing simple and uniform products to its customers, which eventually might pose problems.
