Deviance, in both legal and sociological contexts, describes actions and behaviors that violate informal social norms or formally-enacted rules. One such kind of violation includes heterosexual deviance. Sexual behavior is considered normative behavior. Society classifies a sexual act as deviant based on norms and expectations surroundings such as sexual behavior. The determination of whether a given sexual act is deviant or not depends on a range of factors, which includes religion, cultures, and individual perceptions and attitudes. For instance, heterosexual sexual act between amongst unmarried couples is considered sexual deviance amongst some cultural groups.
Case Study
This paper will pick the Weinstein case as a case example of heterosexual deviance. He was convicted on 24th February 2020 after the Manhattan court found him guilty of rape and committing a criminal sexual offense. According to the CNBC news outlet, the film producer Harvey Weinstein got sentenced for 23 years imprisonment due to sexual assault that has elicited the #MeToo movement in the U.S, which is aimed at ending sexual violence. He was found guilty of two counts during a sexual assault trial, more than two years after the first allegations were leveled against him. Harvey Weinstein’s sentence follows decades of sexual harassment and violence meted on women. Women come forward to report instances where Harvey Weinstein violated their sexual rights. Among those who were victims of Harvey Weinstein include actresses Rose McGowan, Actress Asia Argento, Lucia Strolla, Angelina Jolie, Cara Delevinge, Lisa Rose, Lysette Anthony, and Ashley Judd, among many others (BBC, 2020). There are also atrial of the allegation brought against him regarding harassment of female employees, as well as seeking sexual favors from women with a promise of facilitating their career growth. He even forced women to massage him while naked (BBC, 2020).

It appears that heterosexual behaviors began when Harvey Weinstein violated the basic tenets of sexual norms by seeking sexual favors from women, seeking sexual pleasure without consent, and rape. He sexually abused women through forced massage and used his privileged position to trample on women's sexual rights. This kind of behavior represents an assault on sexual, social norms where sexual exchanges must be consensual, and this marked Harvey Weinstein’s descent into heterosexual deviant behavior. ‘Sexual deviant’ description label befits Harvey Weinstein. Harvey’s actions are considered sexually deviant because his behavioral patterns sought erotic gratification though unusual, odd, different, and acceptable means, which contrast with community’s laws and expectations about sexual practices (Tewksbury, 2015). Thus, I would consider Harvey Weinstein as a sexually deviant individual.
