He plays on the varsity baseball team and is well liked by his classmates. Lately, his grades have significantly dropped to the point that he is in jeopardy of failing at least one course. If his grades fall, he may not qualify for sports. Additionally, he has been late for school or left school early without permission at least once weekly over the past two months. His parents have recently separated and are discussing divorce. Recently, his mother was offered a promotion out of state and she is seriously considering accepting the offer. Jake’s Case Name University Question One The abrupt change in the behavior of Jake is a matter that attracts concern and needs to be addressed urgently. As a student who had appeared in the dean’s list for a significant period of time despite his participation in co-curricular activities (varsity baseball), his abrupt decline in performance is based on a psychological problem that has recently developed in his family. His parents are planning a divorce and the mother is ready to take a promotion in a different state. According to Piaget’s cognitive theory, the wrangles in Jake’s family have affected his schemas significantly (McLeod, 2009, p. 1). As such, his capacity to build knowledge has been affected in a negative manner. The learning capacity of a student depends on the schemas (knowledge building blocks), which depends on the student understanding of the environment (Smith, 2003, p. 26).
