M8D1: Therapeutic Communication
A 3 year old child has just been diagnosed with neuroblastoma. The family is in a state of disbelief. The family or the child does not understand the exact nature or future implications of neuroblastoma. While caring for the child, the nurse must treat him or her as normally as possible. It is also important that the nurse support family members or care providers and allow them time to comprehend the diagnosis.
As the registered professional nurse, what would you say to this family?
For this discussion, select one of the statements below and explain why you would use this statement when working with this family. Be sure to support your decision with material from the textbook or a current nursing publication.
Statement #1– “It is important for you to verbalize and express your feelings.”
Statement #2– “You may find it helpful to talk with others who have had a similar experience as you. I have contact information for a support group. Would you like me to call them for you?”
Statement #3– “I know that this is a difficult time for you. Let's take this day by day and make your child's routine as normal as possible.”

Therapeutic Communication
Neuroblastoma is a form of extra cranial cancer that affects mostly found in children (Cheung, Nai-Kong and Susan, 154). Such a diagnosis can be a form of devastating news to both the child and the parents when dealing with my client and the parents; I am expected to exhibit the highest standards even in our communication. During therapeutic sessions, I would use statement3 "I know this is a difficult time for you. Let`s take this day by day and make your child`s routine as normal as possible." I chose this statement as it depicts various techniques that a nurse should initiate in a therapeutic communication. Researchers have defined therapeutic communication as a form of communication through which a nurse helps a client feel better (Knapp, 178). Statement 3 is in such a broad perspective that it allows a room for a constructive discussion. This also gives the parents a chance to say what they feel can be done to help their child.
