Concerns with Cardiac Medications
Dealing with a 72 year old man refusing medication on grounds of side effects on his personal life is not easy, in this case where congestive heart failure is involved and the patient refuses to take the beta blockers due to the side effects of his personal life by reducing his sexual ability there is a great need to slowly and in a clear way to explain the important of medication to the patient. First the patient who is most likely not aware of his diagnosis need a clear explanation of the situation this will be achieved if as the physician I have all the information required (Konstam, 2000). The patients concern about his sexual affects from the medication may be a good cause to find him other available medication. Listening to the patients concern which is that the medication may reduce his libido and may lead to him being impotent shows that this is of great concern to him, in response to this the patient needs an explanation on the level of the side effect on this case which is very minimal and does not happen to everybody and the effect might not occur to him.
The patient needs to be given a little knowledge on how this medication works in the body and the major reason why it`s prescribed to his condition. The patient needs to also have an understanding of the risks involved in the abrupt stoppage of using the drug as this may cause his heart failure to act up.
