It is estimated that by the year 2006 the global estimates put the percentage of males circumcised at 30%. This figure represented about 670million men and can be viewed as an important factor in showing the rise in the acceptance of male circumcision as a practice amongst nations and communities of the world (Ahmed, 2012).
With the perceived benefits ranging from health to sexual benefits and a notable increase in the practice in the developed world it is therefore important to look at the empirical estimates and justified benefits that are related to circumcision. Tobian et al (2012) point out that one of the health benefits is a reduced chance of contraction of HIV/AIDs amongst the circumcised males and is therefore reported to be one of the most effective means in the fight against the epidemic. Other benefits that have been noted by various studies include, better hygiene (therefore reducing the chance to get infections such as urinary tract infections (UTI), and other sexually transmitted diseases. This has led to an increase in the practice in the industrialized world as a result.
