Over years, overwhelming scientific evidence has emphasized the fundamental importance breastfeeding in the growth, survival and development of the child and subsequently, the health and wellbeing of the mother. The world Health Organization has continually expressed that the requisite nutritional components that the baby requires for its healthy development. To further this, WHO partnered with WHO to institute the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) in 1991 which was aimed at ensuring all healthcare institutions providing maternity care become centers of breast feeding support. The WHO recommends that infants should be granted exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, with the ends of ensuring that there is optimal growth, health and development.
Trends of breastfeeding are however subjected to some social, cultural and economic factors.
