What is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis?
It is a disease that belongs to a group of rare diseases which are neurological and involve the nerves that control voluntary muscles. These are the muscles that control aspects such as walking, talking and chewing among others (National Institutes of Health). What is more is the fact that the symptoms get worse as one grows older. It is a disease that in a group of other diseases which are referred to as motor neuron diseases. Patients that are diagnosed with the disease are subjected to a lifetime of these challenges. Currently there is no cure for the disease and there is no effective way to reverse the condition or even halt the impacts and progression of the same(National Institutes of Health).
What are the causes?
* Genetics –this means that it can be inherited and can also be associated with mutations.
* Environmental factors –the disease has been associated with exposure to toxins during warfare, diet, trauma, occupational hazards and strenuous physical activity (National Institutes of Health).
