Food Plan to Help a Patient with Newly Diagnostic Diabetes

Case Study Instructions:

Case study of newly diagnostic diabetic
Jake sat and thought about what the doctor had told him. He had Type 2 diabetes, but with “appropriate lifestyle changes” he wouldn’t have to give himself insulin injections. Jake was annoyed. All this happened because he was drinking more water than usual and his foot sometimes got numb, with a “pins and needles” feeling. No one in his family had diabetes, and the doctor had explained that this wasn’t uncommon. Jake thought to himself that he wasn’t really out of shape or overweight. According to his doctor, however, he needed to start getting more exercise and eating better. “What about the Atkins or South Beach diets? Both my parents did those a few years back, and lost a lot of weight,” Jake had asked. The doctor had told him, “No. What you need is a balanced diet. And you need to limit snacks with lots of simple sugars.”
Graded Exercise: Create a Plan to Help Jake.
Tonight, Jake is going to watch a TV movie. He’d like to have some snacks and something to drink, but he can still hear what his doctor said. You're going to help him out by searching for 3 food items and 3 drink items that might be good for him. Do some informal research to find something with protein, and possibly some amount of starch, but try to avoid anything with simple sugars. Then complete the following assignment and put it all in a Word file to submit to Turnitin.

Food Items for Jake Green Vegetables

The main objective for managing diabetes is to regulate the intake of blood glucose as much as possible. The total amount of carbohydrates that an individual consumes build the robust influence of glycemic control. Green leafy vegetables are rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. Greens like spinach and kale are the key sources of potassium, vitamin A, and calcium, besides providing protein and fiber. Jake should add the following to his diet in salads, side dishes, and dinner:

* Spinach
* Kale
* Cabbage
* Broccoli

Whole Grains

Jake should eat more brown rice and oatmeal and reduce simple carbohydrates like cookies and sugar. Whole grains are excellent sources of fiber and nutrients. They have a low glycemic load, which makes them ideal for people with the disease. Eating this diet is essential for him because fiber slows down digestion, and significantly slower absorption of food has less of an effect on blood sugar levels. The main concern of patients with type-2 diabetes is glycemic index and load, and its determinants are the amount of fiber, fat, and protein in one’s diet. Whole grains include:

* Brown rice
* Quinoa
* Millet
* Buckwheat

Fatty Fish

Fatty fish contains essential omega-3 fatty acids called eicosapentaenoic acids (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Jake needs this diet to enhance his brain and heart health. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) reports that high polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat intake promotes blood sugar control and blood lipids in patients with diabetes. Jake should consider such fish as salmon, mackerel, sardines, and herring. If he does not get any of these or decides to eat seaweed alternatives, he should take spirulina.

Drink Items

The American Diabetes Association states that patients should use drinks that have low-calorie content. This reduces blood sugar spikes which occur when the body cannot built-up glucose properly. Selecting the best liquids would help Jake counter uncomfortable side effects control his body mass index and weight. Water does not impact a person’s blood sugar level, and it eliminates glucose in the form of urine. For Jake, if drinking too much water is problematic, he could attempt adding lemon or orange slices, flavorful herbs, or he could crush fresh or frozen raspberries into the drink. The best drinks would be:

* Water
* Unsweetened tea
* Unsweetened coffee
