Touch-Screen Technology: Technology Case Study

Case Study Instructions:

In this assignment, you will analyze technology, artifacts, or gadgets based on one of these two concepts. These technological artifacts can be a device, an app on a smartphone, a service, a technology-related event, or a phenomenon. It may be, but not limited to, Uber/Lyft app, Alexa, touch-screen cellphones, Airbnb, roads/freeways, etc. Then, analyze the artifact's effect or bias that you see. You may apply either the technological deterministic or the sociological deterministic approach in your analysis. Be sure to reference some of the theories and concepts that we have discussed.
Length: no more than 2 pages, double-spaced. The References should be either in APA or MLA.
We have covered two crucial concepts in technology: technological determinism and sociological determinism. A quick recap of these two concepts:
Marshall McLuhan argues that technology that delivers the message changes us, society, individuals, work, leisure, and perhaps how we experience the world. The railway accelerated and enlarged the scale of previous human functions, creating new kinds of cities and new types of work and leisure. Does the artifact you chose to analyze change us, society, work, or the ways in which we experience the world? For example, Nicholas Carr argues that the way we use the Internet changes our brains can lead to distraction and shallow thoughts.
Langdon Winner argues that the technical arrangements and the designs of artifacts affect society or what people can do. He adds that artifacts can embody overt political effects, for example, the low bridges in Parkway, New York. But not all inventions have ill-intentions embedded in their designs and adoption. In some cases, it's hard to say that someone wants to harm others. However, what happens might be because the technology that looks like it is effective and convenient can favor certain social groups and provide unequal benefits such as the tomato harvester in CA that gave unequal benefits to the larger companies smaller producers out of business. Do you see the unequal interests in the artifact's efficiency? Who benefits from that? How might that perpetuate certain socio-economical disadvantages in specific segments of the population?

Touch-Screen Technology
Globally, technology is embraced where the correlated artifacts outline their manifestations. The material objects in most engineering industries are made with the full incorporation of technology purposely for practical applications. Despite the indications, these objects analyze the philosophical theories existing in the universe since they act as knowledge tools. Currently, diverse technological artifacts are continuously emerging and still predicted to depict developments continually. Each artifact invented has a significant effect on individuals and society upon effective implementation. However, various negative impacts arise from technology embracement and development, for instance, job insecurity. Technological objects have originated a demarcation in artisan-produced commodities and the invention involved in similar works. Generally, world changes are mainly brought in by technical through the message they signalize. In this case, artifacts touchscreen smartphones have replaced the qwerty industry and emerged as the typical mainstream communication industry.
First, touch screen technology is directly linked to the existing competition in the cell phone manufacturing industries. Most importantly, the sizes of the phones in the market result from the touch screen technology implementation. Initially, the stylus was commonly known as a pointing device, but the thumb is currently outdone through touch screen technology. Langdon indicates that designs applied in artifacts impact the users in the society resulting in a solution to existing problems, for instance, political issues (Winner 128). According to Williams, several technologies are distinctly used in smartphones, for example, use of force sensors and infrared light (Williams 265). In particular, the resistive wire technology is massively applied where the screen consisted of two layers, which, when pressed down they complete a circuit through the contact that is accomplished. A grid of electrical conductors covers the two layers encompassing the electrodes designed in the right-angled (Williams 265). As a result, conductors' passage is allowed to the two films respectively. Conclusively, the touch screen technolog...
