Case One: More Hassle from HR
Summary
The issue in this case is that the management feels that the HR manager is trying to impose on them rules and values that they need to follow instead of including them in the process of coming up with the rules. They feel that the management is using fiat to impose rules on them and this, they never see as the right process. They feel that the training on the rules and core values is a waste of time to them as they see them as the basic training that most of them went through in college. To them, it is as if they are paying for the mistakes of the previous management that prompted the changes to be made.
Analysis and Evaluation
Whereas new set of rules and core values are important in avoiding mishaps, a more involving process would have been welcome. It’s important to note that the management was aware of these rules and core values prior to the happening of the mistakes. Therefore, in a way Gary and Vittorio’s argument can be valid as they see these training as not the right way to approach the problem. Right from the beginning of this case, the problem with Vreeland Pharmaceuticals is very evident. Secondly, the HR management has not taken time to understand and explore the problem in question. The actions of the HR seem to be out of anger against the employees for frustrating and disappointing his team. This is evident looking at the language that the HR has used in communicating with the management. The sales have been low and according to Vitorio and Gary this is the reason why all these actions and training sessions have to be undertaken.
However, the manager seems to understand the problem as being the lack of awareness of the organizations mission and core values. In the training session they have planned to focus on the critical values, core behaviors, fostering conflict resolution and implementing employee involvement strategies. These are very critical aspects in the organization. The resentment of Gary and Connie against these aspects is not right. Yes they are learned and they received training on these aspects in their college education. However, it’s important to understand the need for a contextualized approach in handling organization issues within the organizations cultu...
