It is well known that hexavalent chromium exposures to workers may occur during welding and torch cutting with and onchromium-containing metals. Welding on and with chromium-containing metals routinely occurs at electric utility operations, especially at power generation facilities. The OSHA regulation enacted in 2006 allows for the use of objective data, such as air monitoring of exposures during representatively comparable tasks, instead of personal air monitoring of all potentially exposed workers, as part of an exposure assessment. This presentation describes a study in which many air sampling results during various welding activities from several electric utilities have been gathered, quality verified, grouped, and analyzed to serve as a compilation of objective- and task-specific data. The data are organized by several variables, namely the type of welding process, the chromium content in the base and consumable metals, the environment where the work is being conducted including the relative degree of ventilation and fume dispersal in the area, and the worker’s orientation to the fume plume. In categories in which there is sufficient air sampling data to permit meaningful statistical analysis, the grouped data are tested to determine the probability of exposures that may exceed theophany action level and permissible exposure limit. The results of the analysis, a description of the applications of this database, and a preliminary analysis of data to evaluate the impact of various engineering controls are also presented
