Case Overview
Vitorio Nuños and Gary Shaw have been managers at Vreeland Pharmaceuticals for three years and had rarely crossed paths. On this day, they were on a plane, headed to Kansas City, the headquarters of their company and seated next to each other, began conversing. In their conversation, they are lamenting about the management wasting their time to go to the headquarters for some refresher training on management. They already have a memo of the topic and contents of the meeting they are going to have and believe that the entire process is a waste of time for they already know whatever is in the letter, having studied all the contents in school. They express their displeasure for the meeting, which they feel is meant to belittle them through lectures about things they already know and regarded it as unnecessary to attend.

From the conversation between Vitorio Nuños and Gary Shaw, it is clear that there is little interdepartmental collaboration as the two, despite being managers of the same company, rarely communicate. This is bad for the company and these are some of the points that Connie and her staff should address.
While it is good to retrain your management about the core values of the company, imposing the values by fiat, from top down is not appropriate. According to Puckett (2012), flexibility in leadership style is important as it helps managers implement change to even the most rigid employees. Thus, Vitorio is right that as managers, they understand the people they are dealing with and ought to have some flexibility. Thus, instead of Connie and her team applying an imposing top down approach, they could have explored other approaches such as the bottom up that are more participative or consultative. A consultative meeting would encourage Vitorio Nuños and Gary Shaw to share their experiences about the workplace and from the inform...
