The following are case histories on each of five different people. (True names cannot be revealed so as to protect thje innocent) Your Job Is to consider the symptoms of each person and then to state In your opinion: •the name of the disease •the endocrine gland involved •the hormone
•and whether It is the result of 'hypo or hyper’ secretion.
CASE ||
Suzanne had always been pretty even as a child. Now, even though she was over the hill (at least 35), she still had retained her beauty up until last year.
Suddenly she found that her lower jaw seemed to be growing larger. She noticed that her wedding band no longer would fit on her finger, and that her hands appeared to be getting bigger. Her nose seemed to be taking over her whole face, and her shoes no longer fit on her feet. She noticed that most everything else remaind the same except what she described in the above sentences. Finally she went to her family doctor, to find out what was wrong with her. What do you think was happening to Suzanne?
CASE 2.
Johnny had always been different from his classmates. When he was in third grade he was unable to subtract numbers bigger than ten. He had trouble spelling the simplest words, and difficulty remembering anything. All the kids in his class would tease him. His parents decided to remove him from that school and place Johnny in private school where they could give Johnny more attention.
Unfortunately not much changed for Johnny and things got worse. When Johnny reached the eight grade he was required to take swimming. When Johnny got undressed in the lockerroom, some of the boys said he looked liked a girl!
His mother tried to console him by telling him that he was a late starter and that he would eventually develop© into a fine man someday. Only things got worse, Johnny kept gaining weight, he stopped growing and was a least a foot shorter that the rest of the kids his age.

Frank was a pretty normal individual. He was 27 years old, had just gotten married and had a good job. Everythng seemed to be 'turning up roses’ and then he got hit by some strange disorders. He noticed that he could not bend so easily anymore. In fact anything that required movement became increasingly painful for him. Out of nowhere he began to go into fits of muscle spasms. The doctors thought he might have epilepsy, but this was ruled out. His convulsions continued and prevented him from going to work. Unfortunately Frank was fired from his job. What could you have told Frank about his condition before he lost his job?

Pane was about 20 years old. She had a steady boyfriend whom she planned to marry and had one year to go before her formal education was at an end. She had just been chosen homecoming queen and was president of her sorority. In other words, Diane was on cloud 9, everything was going great. Then disaster struck- at least in her eyes. She noticed that her throat had grown larger in a certain area, but decided it was due to a bad cold she had just recovered from. As time went on, the swelling continued. First it was the size of a lemon, then a tomato, but now it looked as though she had swallowed a grapefruit. She noticed another change about her face as well. Her eyes were starting to buldge. What could you have told Diane about her problem?
CASE 5
Elizabeth was the outdoor type. She loved to walk in fields of flowers, swim in the ocean, ski down glistening slopes, just about any activity that involved nature. She was always full of energy ready to go anywhere, any time. Suddenly one winter her friends noticed a definite change in her behavior and appearance. She withdrew from athletic activities, saying she did not have the energy and that her muscles ached.
She felt exhausted easily, and noticed that her skin color was turning darker. She started to loose weight, and seemed to have difficulty digesting the food she ate.
What might be a reasonable explanation for Elizabeth’s symptoms?
