History Of Modern Architecture And Interiors (Case Study Sample)

A good description is a skill. How do you convey a full understanding of the project, what it looks like, how it functions, what is innovative, inventive, clever, successful about it, in a concise way? How do you mobilize analysis in feedback with a description, rather than as a two-part list? How do you include and mobilize visual information? How are images keyed into the text and allowed to complement the argument?
Select two projects (building or complex) to prepare as a case study:
1. Concisely and synthetically describe the projects—in formal, infrastructural, contextual, technical, technological, structural, material terms, etc., as appropriate.
2. Analyze the projects—discuss its significance both to the discipline and to your interests.
Consideration should be given to conceptual, theoretical, social, political, or cultural contexts. But foremost your analysis should discuss in what ways the project is productive to your work—what are the key ideas, techniques, forms, and so on you will take note of and mobilize in your work, and why—and in what ways might it hold limitations for you.
3. Compare and contrast the projects—are they from the same period or movement, or from different moments? What is their relationship: peer projects (related ideas, positions, and/or aesthetics), genealogical projects (one derives from the other), or competing projects (from differing, and/or antagonistic positions)? What is their relationship for you: why have you chosen these two projects, and how do they connect or contrast productively for you?
4. Develop a strategy for visual material. Pay attention to how the description is to become more than simple documentation—images and information are not to be simply illustrations to a description, but must be subjected to a process of analysis and retooling that develops a visual argument: their deployment must be designed. Use format to help you construct your argument—use it to structure and clarify your claims.
5. Give yourselves time to rework and edit the piece—this will be important. Remember, you are not simply describing the project, but discussing it: your aim is to produce an argument.
6. All sources used in the preparation of the assignment must be fully and accurately acknowledged in a bibliography and image credit list, and in footnotes where applicable (for all quotations, paraphrasing, references to key points in texts, or general references to texts).

History of Modern Architecture and Interiors

The Cologne Cathedral is the prime Roman church. It is the main Gothic church in northern Europe, situated in the town of Cologne, Germany. It is richly articulated with historical structures, but a little stiffly executed. With a precise craftsmanship, the building has a scientific perfection design with a gradual-plan consisting of historical features. The Cathedral was designated a UNESCO World Heritage in 1996. The old cathedral was destroyed in the year 1248 and later the present cathedral was built in the Gothic style in emulation of French church architecture. In the century, the project was stalled with large wooden crane left out above the ground. It was occupied by the French Revolution troops who used it as a hay barn and a stable. In 1842, King Frederick William of Prussia laid a new cornerstone (Cologne Cathedral). The Cologne Cathedral has several art treasures. It was declared a world heritage site by the UNESCO due to the building’s remarkable architecture, outstanding stained-glass windows and for being a shrine to the Three Wise Men.

The Cologne Cathedral has the highest symbolic value among all the churches in Germany. Protestants and Catholics used the Cathedral of Cologne to identify themselves as the undisputed symbol of German Christianity. Historically, it was the efforts of all the Germans to complete the Cathedral as a symbol of German culture. It was the highest building in the world in the year 1880. As a model Gothic cathedral is an architectural perfection and commanding monumentality that attracts visitors daily during the tourist season. The condition of the building is overwhelmingly good. The building was slightly damaged during the Second World War. It was rebuilt by the state, municipal and the church who wanted to preserve and conserve the Cologne Cathedral. Cathedral workshop is still in progress under the supervision of the administration of the Cathedral. Cathedral Architect is the chief director responsible for the ongoing work. Over the past decade, the Cologne Cathedral marks the Zenith of cathedral architecture and simultaneously its culmination (The History Hub). The building is among the highest ranked monuments which represent the milestones of cultural achievement of mankind, which has attracted thousands of people from all over the world.

The Royal Ontario Museum is a cultural and architectural landmark in the Town of Toronto. The structure has undergone numerous add-ons by recognized indigenous architects, following a fine building that shows the regional progress of the early twentieth century. The building is also a bold, modern intervention. In 2007, the building was renewed with a crystal shaped extension to the old building of the museum. The structure made of aluminum and glass on the steel frame is comprised of five intertwined prismatic structures which is the main entrance to the building. The structure is constructed as a connecting bridge to the original Neo-Romanesque. However, the crystal changes the aesthetics and involvement of the museum. The building is
