1. How serious were Stephen Richard’s actions? Why?
Richard’s actions were serious since he collaborated with other executives at Computer Associates to manipulate the quarterly earnings so that they can portray a boost in earnings. These misleading accounting practices were in line with the market expectations of the company and incorporated in its financial reports, contrary to the GAAP principles. As a global head of sales, Richard allowed the extensions of the fiscal quarter, enabling employees to get contracts after the end of the quarter to boost the earnings reported at the end of the fiscal year (Soltes, 2011, p.3). Failure to reveal the backdated contracts was a substantial misrepresentation of financial statements.
